Steadiness

Steadiness in dog training refers to your dog's ability to remain calm, focused, and in control of their impulses, even in distracting or exciting situations. It's the equivalent of your dog saying, "I got this," instead of launching themselves into chaos.

Think of steadiness as your dog's inner Zen master:

A ball is thrown, and your dog doesn’t immediately rocket after it.
A squirrel crosses your path, and your dog doesn't channel their inner wolf.
You drop a juicy steak by mistake, and your dog looks at you like, “You want me to leave it? ok. I’ll just drool quietly over here.”

How Does Steadiness Help in Real Life?

Safety First: Imagine your dog sees a cat across the street. Without steadiness, they might dash after it, ignoring cars and danger. Steadiness keeps them grounded.

Good Manners: Nobody likes the dog who can't resist jumping on Grandma when she visits.

Daily Sanity: Want a calm walk instead of a sled-dog reenactment? That’s the magic of steadiness.

Training steadiness can be a journey. Some dogs pick it up quickly; others are like, “Patience? Never heard of her.” But it’s worth the effort, and here’s the kicker: It’s not just about your dog. It teaches you patience too.

Steadiness isn’t just for hunting dogs. It’s for every dog owner

Ever Screamed “LEAVE IT!” while your dog dragged you toward the neighbor’s barbecue.
Apologized to the delivery person for your dog's “enthusiastic greeting.”
Wondered if their dog secretly moonlights as a tugboat.
When you teach your dog steadiness, you're basically teaching self control

And let’s be honest, we all wish we could borrow some of that steadiness ourselves—especially when life throws us our version of a squirrel.
